Something Old, Something New

If you have concrete floors in your home or business, they can be transformed into something stylish or colorful without hiding them under carpet or an overlay. All you need is stain, seal, or paint, and the professionals at ARC Coatings, a family owned and operated business in Lake Havasu City, Arizona.

But when did the transformation of concrete from wall or floor to art begin? When did durable, versatile, and easy to maintain concrete become something more than a raw structural component?

Those are questions that may never be answered. But we do know that concrete staining, a technique that involves applying a colored solution to a concrete surface to create a decorative effect, is not a new invention.

The Romans developed a solution that was acid based to penetrate the pores of the concrete. A variation of this was used to create the stunning paintings and frescoes in Pompeii, the city buried in a volcanic eruption in 79 A.D.

The Romans were masters of concrete construction. They used it to build many structures, such as aqueducts, bridges, temples, and houses, many of which still stand today.

They also used it as a base for their wall paintings, which are called frescoes. Frescoes are mural paintings that are painted onto freshly laid or wet lime plaster or concrete. The word “fresco” means “fresh” in Italian. The paint mixes with the plaster or concrete and becomes very durable, which is why we can still see them after thousands of years.

The wall paintings in Pompeii are the best preserved of all the Roman frescoes because they were buried under volcanic ash and pumice. The ash preserved the colors and details of the paintings, which are amazing examples of Roman art and culture. The paintings depict various scenes from mythology, history, daily life, religion, and entertainment. They also show the influence of different styles and periods of art history.
